Anybody out there ever hear of Tim McGraw?

Posted on Jan 5th, 2006 by Kelly : Entrepreneur, Leader, VC, Author Kelly
Now I know all you guys out there are thinking, yeah, he's the guy married to Faith Hill, but that's now why I asked.  Jeff McMahon is his keyboard and vocals guy (one of the Dancehall Doctors for you country fans!) and has become a good friend of mine.  Jeff is a philosopher, musician, teacher and poet.  You can check out the great things he's into here and check out  his blog here.  Jeff is doing great stuff for our troops in the desert.

He's a hero.

Thanks for all you're doing Jeff!

US News & World Report Interview

Posted on Jan 9th, 2006 by Kelly : Entrepreneur, Leader, VC, Author Kelly
I don't know that artist, but please tell me that caricature is nothing close!  :)

US News & World Report interviewed me the other day under the auspicies of a book review, but it seemed like they were asking me a lot of political connection questions...  Now I know why.  Check it out:

No laughing at the caricature!  "From You're Hired to You're Elected."

Why I wrote "TAKE COMMAND"...

Posted on Jan 15th, 2006 by Kelly : Entrepreneur, Leader, VC, Author Kelly
Many people have asked me why I wrote my book, TAKE COMMAND, and the three answers to that question are pretty straightforward:

1.  Help Vets Get Hired.  I want to encourage corporate America to embrace vets.  People who have served in the military have been in leadership positions and developed leadership principles that aren't as easily replicated in the civilian workforce. (That's not to say they don't exist!)  The book identifies those ten leadership principles and how they apply to business.

2.  Reassure Vets.  Military service men and women have an incredible skill base but frequently feel anxious and have a sense of trepidation as they prepare to leave the military.  I want to reassure them that they "have the skills to pay the bills" and should focus on a few things to make a successful transition.

3.  Help Develop Leaders.  I believe that everyone, not just those in with military experience, has the ability to augment their leadership capabilities, both in business and in life, and I provide practical examples (as well as great anecdotes from some amazing individuals such as Roger Staubach, Jim Kimsey, Ross Perot, and Marsha "Marty" Evans) about how to develop and implement leadership principles like INTEGRITY, PASSION, SELFLESS SERVICE, IMPECCABILITY, LOYALTY, and TEAMWORK.

To hear and see me explain these things, you can check out this BOOK BYTE.  My publisher put this together -- it is a new marketing tool for authors to sell the book to the book industry (bookstores, book buyers...).  But I do think it answers these questions pretty well!  Check it out.

Best,

Kelly

VERY COOL SHOW...Military meets Business

Posted on Jan 20th, 2006 by Kelly : Entrepreneur, Leader, VC, Author Kelly
Hey all:

I will be hosting a show on the The Military Channel called "GI Factory."  The premiere will be on March 24th at 8 pm.  This is going to be a VERY COOL show.

I'm having a blast (and learning a LOT) going to all of these factories across the US and meeting the workers that are building the weapons, vehicles and equipment that protect our troops.  A lot of the companies also build products that are used by our police, firemen and other public servants.

Basically, I take the viewer from raw materials to finished product on everything from Abrams tanks to M-16s to Kevlar vests and helmets to Helicopters.  I've met the heart of America in these factories and they are incredibly proud of all that they are doing.  Each worker also understands that the products they ship out each day keeping our troops safe.

The Discovery Network will be adding a lot more content to the site as they finalize editing.

Wrok on!

Military.com - Introductory Column

Posted on Jan 22nd, 2006 by Kelly : Entrepreneur, Leader, VC, Author Kelly
Hi All:

I decided to post my column from Military.com here the week after it goes up there.  If you have any comments about it or want to ask me questions about my book, please do so in my forums.

Thanks!

"You're Hired!"  by Kelly Perdew

When Donald Trump said that to me on live television in front of over 15 million viewers, it was pretty exhilarating.  I've been living in a whirlwind for over a year now and very thankful for all the opportunities I've been afforded because of "The Apprentice."

One curious thing that occurred in the aftermath of my victory was that I was asked the same question over and over again, "Do I think that my military background helped me win The Apprentice?"  Everyone asked me that question.  Friends, colleagues and especially the press.  Initially, I answered simply and said yes, the discipline, attention to detail and familiarity of operating under stressful conditions were critical to my win.  But the more I was asked, the more irritated I became.  Doesn't everyone know that the military trains you to be a leader?  To problem-solve?  To lead groups of diverse individuals to overcome any obstacle and achieve a common objective?  Apparently they don't know it!  So, I decided to write a book that would highlight the leadership principles I learned in the military that have helped me succeed in business and in life.  The book is called, "TAKE COMMAND: 10 Leadership Principles I Learned in the Military and Put to Work for Donald Trump."  And I don't ask the reader to believe only me; I spent considerable time with each of six business luminaries that have military backgrounds and they shared with me their insights on how the military has helped them in business and in life.

You've probably heard of several of these people but may not remember they were prior military:

  1. Bill Coleman, USAFA, Founding CEO of BEA Systems
  2. Pete Dawkins, USMA, Vice Chair of Citigroup's Private Bank
  3. Marsha "Marty" Evans, USN, Formerly CEO of the Red Cross
  4. Jim Kimsey, USMA, Founding CEO of AOL
  5. Ross Perot, USNA, Founder of EDS
  6. Roger Staubach, USNA, Founder Staubach Company

Each of these individuals has excelled in both the business world and their military careers.  I feel incredibly lucky to have had the opportunity to meet and get to know them.  I, like each of them, attribute much of my success in business and in life to my military background.

A little about my background -- I went to West Point and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant upon graduation.  I selected Military Intelligence as my branch and went through the Officer Basic Course at Ft. Huachuca, AZ.  I then volunteered for and completed Ranger Training and reported to my first duty station with the 7th ID (Light) at Ft. Ord, California.  I served as an assistant S-2 for 2nd Brigade, and then I moved to the Military Intelligence Battalion where I was a counter intelligence platoon leader and finally, I served as the XO for a company in the Military Intelligence Battalion.  The 7th ID (Light) was a rapid deployment force so one of the three brigades was on two-hour alert during Desert Storm I; although we never deployed.  After three years of active duty and some heavy soul-searching, I decided to avail myself of the voluntary early retirement program that was enacted during Bill Clinton's administration.

I then pursued and received a JD and an MBA at UCLA.  My thirst for entrepreneurship began and I've started or been involved with starting six companies since then.  Some of them have been successful, and some of them haven't.  But in each instance I learned a great deal and was always thankful for the leadership training I received in the military.  Some of those companies are still doing business today:

Angel-Led Venture Partners.  The website is available Jan. 16 - Two partners and I are raising a $50 million venture capital fund to co-invest with the top angel groups in the country in early-stage ventures.

Trump Exclusives.  The largest direct marketing channel for premium brands.  I started this company with Donald Trump.

MotorPride.  The portal for car, truck and motorcycle enthusiasts.  This was the first company I founded where the original business model was my own idea.

CoreObjects.  A high-end software product development outsourcing partner.  I was working as the President of this organization when I won The Apprentice.

Eteamz.  The world's largest amateur sports portal serving over 2.5 million teams.  I was the President of this company when we sold it to Active.com.

Over the next 10 weeks, I'll highlight each of the 10 leadership principles that I describe in my book and talk about real-life examples of how I've put them to use.  I wrote the book to educate corporate America on the leadership principles that are instilled in veterans as well as let transitioning military servicemen and women know they've "got the skills to pay the bills" in the civilian sector.  I'm also donating a percentage of the proceeds to the USO.

I'm looking forward to your feedback and to hearing your stories and examples of leadership both in the military and out in my forums.

Helping High School Drop Outs Get Back On The Road to Success

Posted on Jan 27th, 2006 by Kelly : Entrepreneur, Leader, VC, Author Kelly
One of the charities I support is called the National Guard Youth Challenge Program

This program is simply amazing.

To be eligible, the candidate must be a a high school dropout between the ages of 16 and 18, no felony on their record, and not on drugs at the time they enter the program.

The program is five months of a "watered-down" boot camp at a National Guard unit.  During which time, the cadets earn their GED, learn a trade (electrical, carpentry, etc.) and develop a "life plan."  Then, for 12 months following graduation, they meet weekly with a mentor in their local community to monitor progress.

The result have been astounding.  63,000 kids have graduated from the program.  90% of the kids do one of three things:

1.  Join the military (~1/3)
2.  Get a job (~1/3)
3.  Go on to advanced schooling (~1/3)  That's right...COLLEGE!

So, we're talking taking a kid that is on the WRONG path as a high school dropout and completely turning their life around.  180 degrees.

The cost is $0 to the kid.  The state and federal goverment cost is about $14,000 but the program is trying to get that raised to $16,000.  Right now, the program is only offered through 24 states, but the goal is to have it in all 50 states.

So, here are two my challenges for you --

1.    If you know of any kids that have dropped out of high school, get them in this program.
2.  Contact your local politician and ask them to lobby for this program.

Thanks!

Kelly
